All About the Hype

Whether you're in NYC, LA, Miami, or any other major city, you're bound to run into a ton of "hype beasts" each day. The latest fad all over the world, but especially in major cities is streetwear brands. Palace, Adidas, Yeezy, Comme des Garcons, Supreme, Bape, and Billionaires Boys Club, you name it! Some of these brands are so hyped that they resell for an absurd amount of money more than their retail price. Personally, I don't understand why a Supreme box logo tee (pictured below) should retail about $25 and resell for almost $800.

As you can tell, the shirt is so plain and simple, but authentic ones are extremely rare and hard to purchase through retail which gives it its value to "hype beasts". The same value is given to Kanye West's collaboration with Adidas. His Yeezy 350 V2 sneakers retail $200 through Adidas and other sneaker websites but there are extremely limited quantities which makes them difficult to purchase through retail. If you happen to be one of the lucky people who do get a pair in your cart, you will be able to resell it for over $600 depending on the pair you get. Personally my least favorite pair of Yeezys are the zebras, yet they were the most hyped and hardest to purchase through retail sites (pictured below).
I personally think these are the least attractive pair of Yeezys, yet because of their limited quantity, they retailed $200 and resold for over $1200! It's quite insane because a pair of high end designer sneakers such as Gucci or Prada retail about $600-800 and they are made in Italy of quality leather. Don't get me wrong, Yeezys are great quality and super comfortable, but they're only made by Adidas, a much cheaper brand than the high end designers at Barney's or Bergdorf's. If you want my honest opinion, a lot of these products do look really cool when being worn, but I feel like the only reason they're so overly hyped and so expensive is because they're so rare to purchase. I feel like that's how these brands and products gain their popularity. Everyone wants to own things that are unique and different. Everyone wants to be able to have their own style that nobody else has. Streetwear brands became popular because they gave you a fresh look like no other. I really love streetwear brands but I don't love that they resell for so much especially when there's a piece I really want to buy. Anyways, whether you're into streetwear or not, you can agree that the hype is almost ridiculous and that no $200 sneaker should be being sold for over $1000 more than retail.
